Job Description

Université Laval invites applications for a tenure-track or tenure professor position appointed to the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics, and Optics. At the job starting date (no later than September 1st, 2027), the chosen candidate will be expected to hold a PhD in Physics, Engineering Physics, Astrophysics, or a related field.

A vibrant community in the heart of Quebec City, Université Laval is a comprehensive francophone Canadian university recognized for its leadership and its culture of excellence in both teaching and research. The Department of Physics, Engineering Physics, and Optics provides undergraduate and graduate programs in a collaborative environment. It is a leader in the fields of photonics, medical physics, astrophysics, and theoretical physics. The Astrophysics Research Group of Université Laval (https://astro.fsg.ulaval.ca) is undergoing a renewal. It is currently composed of five members: Profs Laurent Drissen, Hugo Martel, Carmelle Robert, Simon Thibault, and Marie-Lou Gendron-Marsolais, the latter having recently joined. Another professor is arriving next summer. Three professors are expected to retire in the next two years; therefore, one new position is advertised here and two more will be announced over the next two years.

While outstanding candidates from all areas of astrophysics are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to candidates whose research focuses on extragalactic astrophysics, including the formation, evolution, structure, dynamics, and stellar populations of nearby and distant galaxies, the interstellar medium and star formation, active galaxies, galaxy clusters, and cosmology. Expertise encompassing observational and/or theoretical investigations (including numerical simulations) across a broad range of physical scales, wavelength regimes, and instrumental approaches, and in the analysis of detailed astrophysical systems and/or large samples (big data), including the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, will be considered an asset.

The candidate will be expected to conduct a vigorous, original, and independent research program that enables the acquisition of external research funding (from government agencies and other sources) and participation in major national and international research initiatives (e.g., SKA, ALMA, JWST, ELT).

Participation, according to areas of expertise, in the research activities of the Astrophysics Research Group of Université Laval, the Quebec Astrophysics Research Centre (https://craq-astro.ca), and other centers at Université Laval are strongly encouraged.

The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in French (Université Laval offers various means of learning and perfecting the French language during the first three years of employment); supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students; contribute to the academic life, outreach, and reputation of the department, faculty, and university; and participate in administrative duties and curricular development.
