The University of Western Ontario
Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Exoplanets
Applications are invited immediately to fill a probationary (tenure-track) faculty appointment within the Department of Physics and Astronomy as a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) with a research focus on exoplanets, including exoplanetary atmospheres, through theoretical, observational and/or experimental methods.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy website (http://www.physics.uwo.ca/) describes our research-intensive environment involving 28 faculty and over 80 graduate students. The Department has active research groups in astronomy, atmospheric physics, condensed-matter physics, medical physics, and planetary science.
The Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration (CPSX, http://cpsx.uwo.ca/) at The University of Western Ontario acts as an anchor for interdisciplinary research that spans the Faculties of Science, Engineering, Social Science, Arts and Humanities, and the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. ?Stars and Planets? has been identified by the Faculty of Science as a signature research area, and an area of research strength by the University. This CRC position will further strengthen the CPSX research area that currently includes a CRC Tier 1 in Meteor Astronomy, a CRC Tier 2 in Star Formation, an NSERC/MDA/CSA Industrial Research Chair in Planetary Geology, and a CRC Tier 2 in Planetary Materials. Researchers at Western are eligible to apply for observing time at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and Gemini Telescopes, among other facilities available to Canadian astronomers, and also have access to the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SHARCNET).
The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, within the Department of Physics and Astronomy. The selected candidate will be nominated to a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair and appointment to the faculty position will not be conditional on the candidate being awarded the Canada Research Chair. Criteria and information on the CRC program can be obtained at http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/.
The applicant will be expected to contribute to teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels within the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Applicants must possess a PhD degree in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or a related discipline, have a strong record of research productivity, and be well positioned to apply successfully for external funding. The applicant will be expected to develop an innovative and productive independent research program within a collaborative research environment.
Western?s Office of Faculty Recruitment and Retention is available to assist in the transition of the successful applicant and his/her family. Expressions of interest are invited immediately. Consideration of applications will begin on February 15, 2012 and the position will remain open until filled.
Interested candidates should submit electronically a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a research plan, a statement of teaching philosophy, and the names, addresses, and emails of three referees to:
Dr. Shantanu Basu, Chair
c/o Jodi Guthrie, Assistant to the Chair
Department of Physics and Astronomy

Positions are subject to budget approval. Applicants should have fluent written and oral communication skills in English. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. The University of Western Ontario is committed to employment equity and welcomes applications from all qualified women and men, including visible minorities, aboriginal people and persons with disabilities.

Theoretical Physics
Joint Faculty Position in Theoretical Astrophysics, Particle Physics, or Cosmology
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University in Toronto and the nearby Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics invite applications for a
joint appointment in the general area of Theoretical Astrophysics, Particle Physics, or Cosmology, to begin July 1, 2012. This is a tenure-track faculty
position at York, in combination with an associate faculty position at the Perimeter Institute. Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience; exceptional senior applicants may be considered. The appointee will be expected to spend significant amounts of time at both locations,
and will have a correspondingly reduced teaching load.
We seek both established scientists who are leaders internationally in their fields and young scientists who show exceptional promise of becoming
leaders. We especially seek individuals who are interested in communicating with both astronomers and particle physicists and promoting interactions
between the two communities. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally-funded research program and to contribute
to physics and astronomy education and excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate must have a PhD
along with suitable postdoctoral experience, and must be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University.
The Perimeter Institute is a non-profit research institute devoted to foundational theoretical physics research, and is in the midst of a substantial
expansion of its faculty. It currently has strong research efforts across a wide range of interrelated areas, including Cosmology, String Theory, Quantum
Gravity, Quantum Foundations, Quantum Information, Particle Physics, Condensed Matter Physics and Mathematical Physics. Further information can
be found at www.perimeterinstitute.ca.
.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University has strong research groups in both astronomy and high-energy physics. Astronomical
research foci include active galactic nuclei, the evolution of galaxies and their constituents, cosmic structure, and galaxy formation. Research foci in
high-energy physics include lattice gauge theory, QCD, neutrinos, heavy quarks, and physics beyond the Standard Model. Astronomers regularly
undertake optical and infrared observations with facilities such as the Gemini Observatories and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and radio
observations via VLBI. Particle physicists are involved in high-energy experiments at CERN, Fermilab, and J-PARC. Further information can be
found at www.physics.yorku.ca.
To guarantee full consideration, please apply online by January 15, 2012. Please submit a curriculum vitae, a summary of seminal research
contributions, and an outline of research plans. Also, please identify three individuals who are willing to supply letters of recommendation.
Applications should be submitted to
