  On 29 March 2005, HIA hosted the NRC western regions's Outstanding Achievement Awards. NRC President Pierre Coulombe presented an award to Scott Roberts for his work in leading the development for the Very Large Optical Telescope. His concepts paved the way for Canada's entry into the Thirty-Meter Telescope. The event was covered by the media.   Le 29 mars 2005, l'IHA fut l'hôte pour la remise des trophées des grands accomplissements de la région ouest du CNRC. Le Président du CNRC, Pierre Coulombe a présenté un trophée à Scott Roberts pour son travail et son leadership dans le développement du Très Grand Télescope Optique. Ses concepts ont permis l'entrée du Canada dans le Télescope de Trente Mètres. Nous avons eu droit à une couverture médiatique.
  HIA participated in the Gemini Ground Layer Adaptive Optics (GLAO) feasibility study, led by Project Manager Kei Szeto, along with U.Arizona & U.Durham. Together, they presented their findings to the Gemini Design Review committee on 8-9 March 2005, who strongly recommended the GLAO effort to be continued into the Design Phase. The committee was also excited by the potential of significantly improved observational productivity at minimal technical risk.   L'IHA a participé à une étude de faisabilité sur l'optique adaptative au niveau du sol pour Gémini (GLAO), sous le leardership de Kei Szeto, avec l'U.Arizona et l'U.Durham. Leurs résultats furent présentés au Comité d'évaluation des concepts de Gémini le 8-9 mars, lequel a fortement recommandé que l'effort soit continué dans la phase suivante. Le comité était très intéressé par le potentiel de productivité observationnelle accrue et ce à un risque technique minime.
  The scientific work of Sean Dougherty led to two recent press releases, one by ESO on the most compact young star cluster in the Milky Way, and one by NRAO on the collision of powerful stellar winds.   Deux communiqués de presse récents ont fait état des travaux scientifiques de Sean Dougherty, un par ESO sur un amas très compact d'étoiles dans la Voie Lactée, et un de NRAO sur la collision de puissants vents stellaires.
  In April, Eric Leblanc retired from the HIA, after spending 25 years as the HIA librarian in Victoria. Many astronomers and visitors have enjoyed his professional services and collegial contributions. Also, Spring retirements included Diane Crowe & Michael Storr, both with a long career as managers at NRC HIA.   En avril, Éric Leblanc a pris sa retraite de l'IHA, après 25 ans comme bibliothécaire à l'IHA de Victoria. Plusieurs astronomes et visiteurs ont bénéficié de ses services professionnels et de sa participation collégiale. De plus, Diane Crowe & Michael Storr ont pris leur retraite ce printemps, après une longue carrière comme gestionnaires à l'IHA du CNRC.
  International Astronomy Day, organized by RASC - Victoria, was celebrated on 16 April in Victoria, and HIA staff contributed at the Royal BC Museum (James di Francesco, JJ Kavelaars, Jacqueline Porter, & Steve Ewald ) and in the evening at the Centre of the Universe.   Le 16 avril, l'IHA a participé à la célébration de la Journé internationale de l'Astronomie, tenue au Musée Royal de la C-B avec James di Francesco, JJ Kavelaars, Jacqueline Porter, & Steve Ewald et le soir au Centre de l'Univers. Cette journée était organisée par la SRAC - Victoria.
  In April, the CADC released half a millon of processed images from the CFHT, JCMT-SCUBA, and HST, which are now available at the International Virtual Observatory through the "virtual observatory simple image access protocol". CADC's Pat Dowler was in charge of this project.   Cet avril, le CCDA a émis publiquement un demi million d'images traitées en provenance du TCFH, TJCM-SCUBA, et HST, lesquelles sont disponibles à l'Observatoire International Virtuel au moyen du Protocole d'accès simple aux images de l'observatoire virtuel. Pat Dowler du CCDA est en charge de ce projet.
  Following its departure from HIA in Penticton, the ACSIS correlator (spectrometer) has now been successfully integrated at the JCMT telescope in Hawaii in May, where the first "raster" image (TV-scan) of the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 was obtained.   Depuis son départ de l'IHA à Penticton, le corrélateur (spectromètre) ACSIS a été intégré avec succès au Télescope JCM à Hawaii en mai, et une première image "raster" (balayage TV) fut obtenue du Nuage Moléculaire d'Orion 1.
  Late May, HIA staff participated in the CFHT Legacy Survey [LS] committees and the CFHT Scientific Advisory Committee, in Paris. Among others, J.J. Kavelaars & Chris Willott made important presentations at the Paris CFHT LS workshop, and Luc Simard emphasized the status of the handling of the voluminous CFHT data (now 60 Terabytes) in the HIA CADC archives, the electronic transfer from the CFHT to the CADC (exit magnetic tapes), and the CADC pipeline (elixir) for CFHT images of public programs.   Fin mai, le staff de l'IHA a participé au Comité du Relevé du Legs [LS] du TCFH et Comité aviseur scientifique du TCFH, à Paris. Parmi d'autres, J.J. Kavelaars & Chris Willott ont fait d'importantes présentations à l'atelier du LS du TCFH, et Luc Simard a expliqué le statut du cheminement des volumineuses données du TCFH (60 Térabytes) dans les archives du CCDA, le transfer électronqiue du TCFH au CCDA (sans les rubans magnétiques), et le pipeline (elixir) du CCDA pour les images du TCFH des programmes publics.
  The 30 Canadian National Committees [CNC] supported by the National Research Council Canada [NRC] met in June under the auspices of the NRC Committee on International Science, Engineering & Technology. The IAU & URSI [Union Radio Science International] are among the 30. URSI has 10 divisions, one being Radio Astronomy. Yet another time, the URSI CNC was selected as the "best managed" among the 30, and asked to give a presentation on its "best practices". One can consult here the Canadian radio astronomy report 2005 made to the URSI CNC.   Les 30 Comités National Canadiens [CNC] supportés par le Conseil National de Recherches Canada [CNRC] se sont réunis en juin sous les auspices de son Comité pour la Science, l'Ingénierie et la Technologie Internationales. L'UAI & URSI [Union Radio Science International] sont parmi les 30. L'URSI a 10 divisions, l'une étant la Radioastronomie. Encore une fois, le CNC de l'URSI fut choisi comme ayant le "meilleur management" parmi les 30, et on lui a demandé de donner une présentation sur ses "meilleures pratiques".   In a futuristic mode, on May 2 the NBC TV crew filmed a pilot called 'Eureka' for the US SciFi channel using the HIA's superb location, Plaskett telescope and latest building addition in Victoria. Supposedly, all US geniuses are sent to a secret government laboratory ... We can't say more!   Sur un mode futuriste, le 2 mai une équipe de NBC TV a filmé un programme-pilote titré 'Eureka' pour le canal SciFi des Etats-Unis, utilisant l'environnement de l'IHA, le télescope Plaskett et la dernière addition à l'édifice de l'IHA à Victoria. D'après le scénario, tous les génies des Etats-Unis convergent vers un laboratoire secret du gouvernement.... On ne peut révéler la suite...
