Constant meetings at HIA or around Victoria kept us all hopping this summer. Many TMT meetings and workshops were held in the Victoria area, as well as the 5-year FUSE celebration, an international symposium focussing on 5 years of scientific results in August. In the second half of July, HIA hosted at Penticton three meetings on the Square Km Array project: the SKA International Engineering Management Team (concerning the six different technology concepts) organized by Bruce Veight, the Radio Frequency Interference Workshop co-sponsored by SKA (concerning RFI regulations and techniques) organised by Ken Tapping, and the SKA Consortium (concerning the progress of the project and the key science areas) organized by Sean Dougherty.	Plusieurs rencontres à l'IHA ou autour de Victoria nous ont tenu occupés! Plusieurs ateliers pour le TMT furent tenu à Victoria, de même qu'un symposium international célébrant 5 ans de résultats scientifiques avec FUSE en août. Durant la dernière quinzaine d'août, l'IHA à Penticton fut l'hôte de 3 rencontres: l'Equipe Internationale de Gérance de la technologie de SKA (sur six concepts différents), organisé par Bruce Veight, l'Atelier sur l'Interférence des radio fréquences (sur la régulation et les techniques de RFI) organisé par Ken Tapping, et le Consortium SKA (sur les progrès et les domaines scientifiques clés) organisé par Sean Dougherty.
At the CASCA-2004 meeting in Winnipeg this June, Margaret Milne (HIA - Center of the Universe) received a prize for the best student astronomy poster, while two graduate students were awarded certificates from the Canadian National Committee of the Union Radio Science Internationale: Margaret Livingstone (McGill U) for best radio astronomy poster paper, Kevin Douglas (U Calgary) for best radio astronomy oral paper. In addition, David Routledge (U. Alb) and Ken Tapping wrote the Annual report on canadian radio astronomy, which can be consulted on the Canadian URSI web. NRC supports URSI, and HIA serves at its canadian anchor.	Lors de l'assemblée CASCA-2004 à Winnipeg en juin, Margaret Milne (IHA - Centre de l'Univers) a reçu un prix pour meilleur poster étudiant en astronomie, et deux étudiants gradués ont reçu un certificat du Comité National Canadien de l'Union Radio Science Internationale: Margaret Livingstone (McGill U) pour la meilleure affiche en radioastronomie, Kevin Douglas (U Calgary) pour la meilleure présentation orale en radioastronomie. De plus, David Routledge (U. Alb) et Ken Tapping ont écrit le Rapport annuel sur la radioastronomie canadienne, qui peut être consulté sur le site web canadien de l'URSI. Brenda Matthews started work in September at HIA as a Research Associate. Her PhD in 2001 was from McMaster U, and she did a postdoc at Univ. Calif. at Berkeley. She is interested in magnetic fields and starformation in interstellar clouds, including debris disks, grains and chemicals.	Brenda Matthews a commencé son travail à l'IHA en septembre comme Chercheure Associée. Elle a obtenu son doctorat en 2001 de McMaster U, suivi d'un postdoc à Univ. Calif. Berkeley. Elle a un intérêt particulier pour les champs magnétiques et la formation des étoiles dans les nuages interstellaires, incluant les fragments de disques, grains et composantes chimiques.
At the beginning of Sept., Patrick Côté started at HIA as New Horizons astronomer. Pat received his PhD from McMaster U in 1994, and was an HIA RA until 1997, when he joined CalTech and later Rutgers U. His research includes globular cluster systems of nearby galaxies and others.	Début sept., Patrick Côté débuta comme astronome "Nouveaux Horizons". Pat a reçu son PhD en 1994 de McMaster U, et fut un CA avec nous jusqu'à 1997, lorsqu'il transféra à CalTech et plus tard à Rutgers U. Parmi ses recherches, on note les système d'amas globulaires et autres.
Laura Ferrarese arrived at HIA as a New Horizons astronomer. She received her PhD in 1996 from Johns Hopkins U, before joining STSci, CalTech, UCLA, and Rutgers U. Her research interests include massive black holes in galaxies.	Laura Ferrarese est arrivée à l'IHA comme astronome "Nouveaux Horizons". Elle a reçu son PhD en 1996 de Johns Hopkins U, avant de joindre STSci, CalTech, UCLA, et Rutgers U. Parmi ses recherches, on trouve les trous noirs massifs des galaxies.
Eric Peng started work at HIA as a Research Associate. His PhD in 2003 was from Johns Hopkins U, and he did a postdoc at Rutgers U. He is interested in planetary nebulae and globular clusters.	Eric Peng a commencé son travail à l'IHA comme Chercheur Associé. Il a obtenu son doctorat en 2003 de Johns Hopkins U, suivi d'un postdoc à Rutgers U. Il a un intérêt particulier pour les nébuleuses planétaires et les amas globulaires.
Linda Sparke takes a 4-month sabbatical at HIA. She comes form U Wisconsin, and works in observing and modelling warped disks, polar rings, and bars in galaxies.	Linda Sparke prend une sabbatique de 4 mois à l'IHA. Elle nous arrive de U Wisconsin, et travaille à observer et modeliser les disques tordus, les anneaux polaires, et les barres dans les galaxies.
New members of the Canadian Time Allocation Committee for the Gemini and Canada-France-Hawaii Telescopes are Jayanne English (U Man) and Harvey Richer (UBC). The new member of the Canadian Time Allocation Group for the James-Clerk-Maxwell Telescope is Howard Yee (U Toronto).	De nouveaux membres du Comité canadien d'allocation de temps aux télescopes Gémini et Canada-France-Hawaii sont Jayanne English (U Man) et Harvey Richer (UBC). Le nouveau membre du Groupe canadien d'allocation de temps au Télescope James-Clerk-Maxwell est Howard Yee (U Toronto).
Congratulations and long-service pins were bestowed on Henry Matthews for 25 years of service to NRC, as well as on Russell Redman and Peter Stetson for their 20 years of service. They are all continuing their hard work with us. Alan Batten will teach, at U Vic's Dept of History in the Fall 2004, a course titled "Science & Religion in Europe from Galileo to Darwin". Alan and colleagues at UVic are in the throes of planning for next March the 100th anniversary celebration of Einstein's annus mirabilis, in which he published four major papers including the one on special relativity and the one on the photoelectric effect (which led to his Nobel Prize).	Alan Batten enseignera, au département d'Histoire de l'U Vic cet automne 2004, un cours intitulé "Science et religion en Europe de Galilée à Darwin". Alan et des collègues à l'U.Vic planifient pour mars 2005 la célébration du 100e anniversaire de l'annus mirabilis d'Einstein pendant laquelle il a publié 4 papiers de grande importance, incluant celui sur la relativité spéciale et celui sur l'effet photo-électrique (qui lui valu le Prix Nobel).
Refereed reviews in journals: The Sept. issue of Physics Today has a review by Sidney van den Bergh on the roles of Hubble and Sandage in the study of galaxies. An extensive (79 pages) review on "Cosmic magnetic fields" (covering the Universe, galaxies, and the Milky Way) appeared in the 2004 Sept. issue of New Astronomy Reviews (formerly Vistas in Astronomy), drafted by Jacques Vallée.	Synthèses arbitrées de journaux: Dans son édition de sept., Physics Today contient une revue par Sidney van den Bergh sur les rôles de Hubble et Sandage dans l'étude des galaxies. Une grande synthèse (79 pages) sur les "Champs magnétiques Cosmiques" (couvrant l'Univers, les galaxies, et la Voie Lactée) vient de paraître dans l'édition de sept. 2004 du journal New Astronomy Reviews (anciennement Vistas in Astronomy), sous la plume de Jacques Vallée.
