In July, DRAO staff in Penticton experienced the thrill of relocating offices, computers, and laboratories as they moved into their new building, whose construction took only slightly more than a year, under the leadership of Tom Landecker and Ron Casorso. In late July, Joeleff Fitzsimmons announced that the HIA Megaprime components passed final acceptance tests, including the HIA-built focus stage and guide probes, as well as the support equipment and test fixtures. It has since been sent to Hawaii, where it will be integrated with the French and CFHT-built Megacam components. In August, Glen Herriot reported that Altair passed the acceptance tests. It was tilted to extreme angles and even used a "turbulator", yet stayed within the error budget. It will be shipped in late September to Hawaii and it is scheduled by Gemini to see the sky in mid-November. En août, Glen Herriot a annoncé qu'Altair a subi ses tests avec succès. Il fut penché à des angles extrêmes et fut passé au "turbulateur", mais resta en dedans de l'erreur projeté. Il sera envoyé fin septembre à Hawaii, où il est censé voir les étoiles en mi-novembre au télescope Gemini.
On 30 July, a grass fire occurred near us on Little Saanich Mountain. The new reservoir and hydrant system installed during the upgrades in Victoria in 1999-2001 performed superbly in the capable hands of the Saanich Fire Department. Jennifer Johnson joined HIA as a Research Associate in September. Her PhD is from U. Calif. at Santa Cruz, and she was a Carnegie Fellow prior to joining HIA. Her interests include photometric and spectroscopic data of stars in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies. Jennifer Johnson s'est jointe à l'IHA comme Chercheuse Associée en septembre. Son PhD est de l'U. de Calif. à Santa Cruz, et elle fut Carnegie Fellow avant de se joindre à nous. Son champ de recherche englobe les données stellaires photométriques et spectroscopiques, en provenance de la Voie Lactée et de galaxies proches.
J.J. Kavelaars has joined HIA's CADC in Victoria in August, as an astronomer. His BSc(1989) is from Guelph, and his PhD(1997) is from Queen's Univ. at Kingston. He did PDF work at McMaster Univ. J.J. is famous for the discoveries of small solar system bodies, and expertise in data reduction and photometry techniques. J.J. Kavelaars a rejoind le CCDA de l'IHA à Victoria en août, comme astronome. Son BSc(1989) est de Guelph, et son PhD(1997) est de l'Univ. Queen's à Kingston. Il a fait un PDF à l'U. McMaster. In September, Raymond Rusk moved from Victoria to Penticton, to become the Development Engineer for the ALMA Offline software. Raymond got his PhD in astronomy at the Univ. of Toronto (1988) on polarized compact radio sources. En septembre, Raymond Rusk a transféré de Victoria à Penticton pour prendre le poste d'Ingénieur en développement de logiciel ALMA non-relié. An NRC Press Release in July heralded the naming of asteroid James Hesser by the IAU's Minor Planet Center. Un Communiqué de presse en juillet a annoncé la désignation de l'astéroide James Hesser par le Minor Planet Center de l'IAU.
Elisabeth Griffin and J.C. McConnell (York U) were awarded in July a grant from the CFAS (Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Science) to investigate the use of historic stellar spectra (the Huggins bands near the 3000 Ang. ozone cutoff) to find previous concentrations of ozone in the Earth's atmosphere. Elisabeth Griffin et J.C. McConnell (U. York) ont reçu une bourse en juillet par la Fondation canadienne pour la Science du Climat et de l'Atmosphère (CFAS) pour étudier l'usage de spectres stellaires anciens (les bandes Huggins près de la coupure de l'ozone à 3000 Ang.) et ainsi trouver d'anciennes concentrations d'ozone dans l'atmosphère de la Terre.
In September, Alan Batten started giving a course at the Univ. of Victoria's Department of History, entitled "History 396 - Science and religion in the West from Galileo to the present day". En septembre, Alan Batten a commencé à donner un cours au département d'Histoire de l'U. de Victoria, intitulé "History 396 - Science et religion dans l'Ouest de Galilée à nos jours".
A candidate to become an Artist in Residence, a new program by NRC and the Canada Council to locate an artist among scientists for 2 years, will visit HIA on 30 Sept. The goal of this NRC - Canada Council program is cross-fertilization of the creative process of an artist with scientists and engineers. Une candidate pour le programme Artiste en résidence, une collaboration du CNRC avec le Conseil des Arts du Canada, visitera l'IHA le 30 sept. Ce programme, voulant qu'un artiste côtoye des scientifiques pendant 2 ans, vise l'interaction du processus créatif entre un(e) artiste et des scientifiques et des ingénieurs.
