Rothney Astrophysical Observatory Update

The RAO continues the current upgrade campaign. In addition to the research infrastructure upgrade reported in the Spring edition of e-Cass, we have now received a new award, under Alberta’s Science Awareness and Promotion program, to upgrade the plant with a new Visitors’ Centre, which is to contain a 100-seat theatre (tripling the size of our current RAO classroom capacity), a display gallery, and storage and laboratory areas to support the RAO’s teaching and outreach programs. The provincial grant is for $270,000, with university units contributing another $90,000, in-kind and cash. The design is by award-winning architect John Brown of the University of Calgary’s Architecture Program and is to include responsible and efficient downlighting. An additional $80,000 in additional funding in being sought to complete the project, which will also entail remote access to the telescopes (useful for both researchers, and on occasion, schools throughout the province), and webcasts of Open House events. The total amount of funding received or committed thus far for the RAO upgrades over the past two years now totals $710,000.
