Simon Lilly left Victoria for Zurich on 1 February 2002, having spent 16 months as HIA Director General. HIA is indebted to Simon for his efforts at promoting the LRP inside NRC and to the Government, as well as his innovative ideas and leadership within the Institute. His stay was brief, but his impact very significant. Since 1 February, Jim Hesser has been serving as Acting Director General until a replacement for Simon is selected. In mid-December 2001, NRC identified internal funding beginning April 2002 for critical LRP efforts, amounting to close to $36M Cdn. HIA's Executive Committee has worked on a proposed plan for allocating those resources effectively, which the HIA Advisory Board recently reviewed (see their report elsewhere in this issue). Lorne Avery recently joined the HIA Executive Committee to ensure that ALMA is at the forefront of our consciousness and to provide the wisdom of his many years of experience. The US NRAO announced that HIA's Charles Cunningham had been appointed 'North American Front End Division Head' for ALMA receivers, effective in January 2002. This arrangement demonstrates the close and productive working relationship between the USA and Canada for ALMA and EVLA, under the aegis of the NAPRA agreement signed a year ago. In January, NRC issued a Press Release to announce the opening of the Gemini South telescope in Chile; Canada is a partner in the Gemini observatory (North and South) at the 14.3% level. NRC President Arthur Carty spoke on behalf of Canada at the dedication ceremony. Since January, the Canadian Time Allocation Committee for Gemini and CFHT welcomes Chris Pritchet (Univ. Victoria), while the Canadian Time Allocation Group for JCMT welcomes Rene Plume (Univ. In January, John Galt completed a 7-month study of the radio spectrum between the wavelengths of 75 cm and 17 cm, to find out how much bandwidth is available for the proposed Canadian Large Adaptive Reflector [CLAR] at Penticton. He found many gaps free of interference for many hours each day, sufficient to fulfill the needs of the CLAR project. CADC delivered a new version of the Archive Storage Subsystem [ASTO] to ESO. ASTO manages the copying of files onto media (DVD, CD, tapes) for users or the archive. ASTO has now been installed and is operational in Garching (ESO HQ), at Paranal (VLT telescopes), and at La Silla (NNT and 3.6m telescopes). The team in Victoria consisted of Séverin Gaudet, project manager, Shannon Jaeger, lead programmer, and Norman Hill. In mid-February, the entire 36-mosaic box set of HI data from the Phase I Canadian Galactic Plane Survey [CGPS] was released in Penticton. Next in line is Phase II CGPS, a large piece of sky of which about half has been observed and the other half should be observed before March 2004. In February, Rick Murowinski received the NRC Corporate Outstanding Achievement Award for his work on the Gemini North Multi Object Spectrograph, notably for meeting stringent systems engineering design and outstanding team leadership. At the same NRC awards ceremony in Ottawa, President Arthur Carty announced that Puragra (Raja) Guthathakurta (Univ. Calif. Santa Cruz) is appointed as the 2nd winner of the Herzberg Memorial Prize and Fellowship. A remarkably versatile observational astrophysicist, Raja will spend the next academic year at HIA. En février, Rick Murowinski a reçu le Trophée d'accomplissement exemplaire des Services Intégrés du CNRC pour son travail sur le Spectrographe à Objets Multiples de Gémini Nord, ayant répondu à des normes sévères dans la conception de système d'ingénierie et pour la conduite exemplaire de son équipe. A la même cérémonie des trophées du CNRC, le President Arthur Carty a annoncé que Puragra (Raja) Guthathakurta (Univ. Calif. Santa Cruz) a gagné le 2e Prix et Bourse Herzberg. Un astrophysicien observationnel très versatile, Raja passera sa prochaine année académique à l'IHA.
Jason Fiege (PhD'99 McMaster U.) joined us as an Research Associate in January 2002, previously at CITA in Toronto. With his expertise on star formation and filamentary clouds, he will be interacting a great deal with the Submillimetre Group in Victoria, notably on polarimetry. Luc Simard (PhD'96 U.Victoria) joined our staff in January from the University of Arizona. He will bring his expertise on cosmology and extragalactic astronomy to bear on major CADC projects such as the CFHT Legacy Survey. Sean Dougherty (PhD'93 U.Calgary) became a permanent employee at DRAO, while managing the Canadian S2 Space VLBI correlation center. Sean is an expert on massive stars. Among other tasks, he will take a leadership role in the CLAR project. Congratulations to Lewis Knee (PhD'91 Chalmers) at DRAO who became a permanent employee. Cold HI arcs are among his recent works. Among other tasks, he will bring his expertise on the IGPS science planning. Jason Fiege (PhD'99 McMaster U.) s'est joint en janvier 2002 comme Attaché de recherche, venant de CITA à Toronto. Avec son expertise en formation d'étoile et nuages filamentaires, il travaillera beaucoup avec le Groupe sous-millimétrique de Victoria, notamment en polarimétrie.
