Here is a list of recent news from the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics [HIA] in the National Research Council Canada [NRC], as selected, edited, and adapted for Cassiopeia. Voici une liste de nouvelles de l'Institut Herzberg d'Astrophysique [IHA] du Conseil National de Recherches Canada [CNRC], sélectionnées, éditées et adaptées pour Cassiopeia.
HIA's Canadian Astronomy Data Centre in Victoria is hosting the 11th annual ADASS [Astronomical Data Analysis Software and Systems] meeting from 30 Sept. to 3 Oct. Daniel Durand is the Chair of the Local Organising Committee, and about 250 people from 15 countries are registered for the event. Le Centre Canadien de Données Astronomiques à Victoria est l'hôte du 11e congrès de l'ADASS [Astronomical Data Analysis Software & Systems] du 30 sept. au 3 oct. Daniel Durand est le Président du Comité Local d'Organisation, et environ 250 personnes venant de 15 pays se sont enregistrées pour cet événement.
"First Light" for GMOS occured at Gemini North on Mauna Kea on 4 August. HIA's Rick Murowinski and David Crampton reported that the first slitless spectrum was acquired immediately afterwards. The entire GMOS team, scattered around the globe, was warmly congratulated by Gemini HQ. Le 4 août, une 'première lueur' est sortie de GMOS de Gémini Nord au Mauna Kea. NRC issued a Press Release on the "Dark Arc" found by Lewis Knee and Chris Brunt at the DRAO in Penticton. The full article can be seen in the 19 July issue of Nature. On each Sunday in August, the Centre of the Universe held a different Stargazer Sunday Event: "Full Moon Fever" (Aug.5), "Catching a Falling Star" (Aug.12), "Scoping Out the Universe" (Aug.19), and "Dark of the Moon Party" (Aug.26). Chaque dimanche en août, le Centre de l'Univers a initié un événement pour observer: "Full Moon Fever" (5 Août), "Catching a Falling Star" (12), "Scoping Out the Universe" (19), et "Dark of the Moon Party" (26).
HIA has collaborated with Christine Wilson [McMaster] to build a 183 GHz radiometer for atmospheric water vapour monitoring. Charles Cunningham has led this effort which resulted in the successful installation and commissioning of the radiometer on one of the SMA antennas in August. This instrument is the first step in providing phase correction capability for the future JCMT-SMA link. En août, l'IHA a collaboré avec Christine Wilson [McMaster] pour construire un radiomètre pour surveiller à 183 MHz la vapeur d'eau atmosphérique. Charles Cunningham a dirigé cet effort pour finalement installer et commissionner le radiomètre sur une des antennes du SMA. Cet instrument est la première étape pour faire une correction de phase sur le lien TJCM-SMA à venir.
HIA was pleased to welcome Doug Johnstone in early September as its newest staff astronomer. Doug comes to HIA from the University of Toronto. He has a strong interest in the formation of protostars, the structure of star-forming molecular clouds and the interstellar medium in general. He will be a valuable addition to the JCMT-ALMA Group. L'IHA est heureuse d'accueillir Doug Johnstone depuis le début de septembre comme membre du staff. Doug nous arrive de l'Univ. de Toronto. Il possède un intérêt certain pour la formation des protoétoiles, la structure des nuages moléculaires contenant des sites de formation stellaire, et le milieu interstellaire en général. Il apportera un support important au Groupe TJCM-ALMA.
Peter Stetson spent the summer at ESO in Garching on how to measure hundreds of equivalent widths per spectrum when the data are rolling out of new medium-to-high dispersion MOS (such as FLAMES) at a rate of 1000 spectra per night - the result is known as "DAOSPEC". Peter Stetson a passé l'été à Garching [ESO] sur le projet suivant: comment mesurer des centaines de largeurs équivalentes sur chaque spectre, lorsque les données roulent à 1000 spectres par nuit venant des SMO à médium ou grande dispersions (tels que FLAMES). Il en est sorti "DAOSPEC".
The month of August saw two important steps towards successful Canadian involvement in the ALMA project. The first meeting of the newly-formed Canadian ALMA Science Steering Committee took place in Victoria. The committee is chaired by Christine Wilson [McMaster], the Canadian ALMA Project Scientist, and will serve to advise Christine in her role as a member of the international ALMA Science Advisory Committee, and to monitor HIA's ALMA-related activities. In addition, senior members of NRAO's ALMA team took part in a two-day meeting in Victoria to discuss specific contributions that Canada will make to ALMA. En août fut tenue à Victoria la première rencontre du nouveau Comité Directeur Canadien pour la Science avec ALMA, sous la présidence de Christine Wilson [McMaster], la Scientifique Canadienne du Projet ALMA. Ce comité avisera Christine dans son rôle de membre du Comité Aviseur international pour la Science avec ALMA, et évaluera les activités de l'IHA reliées à ALMA. De plus, des membres principaux de l'Equipe ALMA du NRAO ont pris part à Victoria à une rencontre de 2 jours pour discuter des contributions spécifiques que le Canada pourra faire pour ALMA.
