Here is a list of recent events at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics [HIA] in the National Research Council Canada [NRC], as selected, edited, and adapted for Cassiopeia. Voici une liste des événements à l'Institut Herzberg d'Astrophysique [IHA] du Conseil National de Recherches Canada [CNRC], sélectionnés, édités et adaptés pour Cassiopeia.
A new Executive Committee was put in place at HIA in mid-February 2001, and it is composed of Simon Lilly (DG), David Crampton, Peter Dewdney, Jim Hesser, Tom Landecker, and Michael Storr. The more stream-lined decision making process will provide a collective understanding of issues facing HIA and a collective view of priorities. The JCMT Group's engineering component moves to the Instrumentation Group, set to cover millimeter wave to optical wavelengths. This ensures that the mm-wave component can grow and access the full technical resources of HIA as we embark on ALMA. The JCMT Group's scientific component is broadened to include ALMA. Un nouveau Comité Exécutif est en place à l'IHA depuis la mi-février 2001, composé de Simon Lilly (DG), David Crampton, Peter Dewdney, Jim Hesser, Tom Landecker, et Michael Storr. La restructuration du processus décisionnel amènera une entente et une vue collective des priorités à l'IHA. La composante d'ingénierie du Group TJCM est transférée au Groupe des Instruments, couvrant maintenant les ondes millimétriques aux ondes optiques. An Industrial Outreach Task Force [IOTF] was formed in January 2001 to give coherence and energy to HIA's Victoria-based technology outreach efforts and business development. It is composed of John Dunfield (leader), David Crampton, Joeleff Fitzimmons, Séverin Gaudet, Michael Storr, Keith Yeung, and Martin Ward. A DRAO Industry Liaison Committee also operates in Penticton. In the future, the IOTF will be complemented by a similar initiative in Public Outreach. Un Groupe de Travail pour une Campagne Industrielle {GTCI] a été formé en janvier 2001, pour harmoniser et unifier les efforts faits à l'IHA de Victoria sur l'éducation technologique et le développement commercial. Il est composé de John Dunfield (chef), David Crampton, Joeleff Fitzimmons, Séverin Gaudet, Michael Storr, Keith Yeung, et Martin Ward. Il y a aussi à Penticton un Comité de Liaison avec l'Industrie à l'OFRA. Dans le futur, le GTCI sera complémenté par une initiative semblable en Campagne Publique.
Since January, the NRC-sponsored Canadian Time Allocation process (CTAC; CTAG) has welcomed the following new members: Roberto Abraham (UofToronto), Stéphanie Côté (HIA Victoria), David Hartwick (UofVictoria), Doug Johnstone (UofToronto), John Lester (UofToronto). In addition, Pierre Bastien (UdeMontréal) has assumed Chairmanship of CTAC. The success of astronomy depends on the active participation of knowledgeable people in the many peer activities and infrastructure duties. This allows Canada to derive full benefit from its international affiliations. Depuis janvier, le processus d'allocation de temps canadien, supporté par le CNRC, a admis plusieurs nouveaux membres: Roberto Abraham (UofToronto), Stéphanie Côté (HIA Victoria), David Hartwick (UofVictoria), Doug Johnstone (UofToronto), John Lester (UofToronto). De plus, Pierre Bastien (UdeMontréal) est devenu Chef du CATC. Le succès de l'astronomie dépend de la participation active de gens expérimentés dans plusieurs activités de revision et d'infrastructure. Ceci permet au Canada de bénéficier pleinement de ses ententes internationales.
In January, Rick Murowinski, Chris Morbey, Tim Hardy, and John Hutchings received official Certificates of Appreciation from the Canadian Space Agency for helping the FUSE mission. En janvier, Rick Murowinski, Chris Morbey, Tim Hardy, et John Hutchings ont reçu un Certificat officiel de Reconnaissance de la part de l'Agence Spatiale Canadienne pour avoir aidé à la mission FUSE.
Laurent Jolissaint arrived in Victoria in mid-Dec. 2000 as a guest worker, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation for a year. PhD 2000 from the University of Geneva, Laurent will be collaborating with Jean-Pierre Véran on point-spread function reconstruction and multi-conjugate adaptive optics. Laurent Jolissaint a débuté en mi-déc. 2000 une année à Victoria comme chercheur invité, supporté par la Fondation Nationale Suisse pour la Science. Après son Ph.D. 2000 de l'Université de Genève, Laurent collabore maintenant avec Jean-Pierre Véran sur la reconstruction de la fonction d'étalement de point et sur l'optique adaptative multi-conjuguée.
In February, Raymond Rusk reported in Victoria for a 3-year job in UNIX system administration and astronomy software support. Raymond did his PhD at the Univ. of Toronto in radio astronomy, and has since worked for, e.g., the Defense Research Establishment Pacific and the Pacific Forestry Center. En février, Raymond Rusk s'est joint à l'IHA-Victoria pour 3 ans comme administrateur de système UNIX et aide pour logiciels astronomiques. Raymond a fait son PhD à l'Univ. de Toronto en radioastronomie, et a depuis travaillé au Centre de Recherches pour la Defense du Pacifique et au Centre de Foresterie du Pacifique.
On 21 February, Gilbert Normand, Secretary of State (Science, Research & Development), Industry Canada, visited HIA Victoria in conjunction with some industry leaders supportive of the Long Range Plan for Canadian Astronomy. The visit went extremely well and was focussed on Canadian astronomy and HIA's role in it. Subsequently he visited the observatories in Hawaii in the first week of March. Le 21 février, Gilbert Normand, Secrétaire d'Etat (Science, Recherches & Développement), Industrie Canada, a visité l'IHA Victoria en conjonction avec des capitaines d'industries supportant le Plan Canadien à Long Terme en Astronomie. La visite s'est très bien déroulée et fut centrée sur l'astronomie canadienne et la part de l'IHA. Puis dans la première semaine de mars, il a visité les observatoires à Hawaii.
Stockwell Day, the Leader of the Opposition and MP for Okanagan-Coquihalla, visited HIA DRAO on 15 Dec.2000. Mr. Day expressed his support for science and technology, and stressed the importance his party places on these issues. Stockwell Day, Chef de l'Opposition et MP pour Okanagan-Coquihalla, a visité l'OFRA de l'IHA le 15 déc. 2000. M.
