Here is a list of recent events at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics [HIA] in the National Research Council Canada [NRC], as selected, edited, and adapted for Cassiopeia. Voici une liste des événements à l'Institut Herzberg d'Astrophysique [IHA] du Conseil National de Recherches Canada [CNRC], sélectionnés, édités et adaptés pour Cassiopeia.
The 1.8m Plaskett telescope in Victoria was closed 1 October 2000 for seismic upgrading and reopened in late April 2001. Slated to be closed for only 2 months, it actually took 7 months to complete the upgrades! Doug Bond and Les Saddlemyer resumed engineering operations and Dave Balam from UVic was the first astronomer to use it after the shutdown. On 9 June 2001, HIA officially opened its brand new building for the general public. Various public and NRC dignitaries were on hand for the opening of the "CENTRE OF THE UNIVERSE", whose Director is Scott Mair. The Centre has a staff of 11 people, of which 7 are seasonal. The Centre is a key public outreach component of NRC and HIA for astronomy. Le 9 juin 2001, l'IHA a officiellement ouvert son tout nouvel edifice pour accueillir le grand public. Plusieurs dignitaires étaient présents pour l'ouverture du "CENTRE DE L'UNIVERS". dont le Directeur Scott Mair. Le Centre a 11 employés, dont 7 sont saisonneiers. Le Centre est une composante importante d'une campagne publique en astronomie par l'IHA et le CNRC.
In March, a private contractor erected at DRAO in Penticton a massive aerostat hangar for the Large Adaptive Reflector proof-of-concept experiments that will begin soon. The imposing structure is 4 storeys high, with a floor area of 15m x 24m, and dominates the landscape at the test site. In April, a cylindrical airspace above the site was established to keep aircraft at bay, with a height of 305m above ground. En mars, des travailleurs d'une compagnie privée ont érigé à l'OFRA de Penticton un hangar pour aérostat, pour les expériences devant commencer bientôt sur la faisabilité d'un Grand Réflecteur Adaptatif. Le hangar est imposant avec ses \4 étages, un plancher de 15m x 24m, et il domine le paysage au site. En avril, le ciel au-dessus de ce site, s'élevant a 305m du sol, a été délimité pour éviter que les avions y pénètrent.
On 22 May 2001, the Honourable Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry and responsible for the NRC, unveiled plans for a new laboratory space at DRAO in Penticton, amounting to 3 M$Can. Construction will commence later this year. "NRC facilities like DRAO have a core team of researchers who participate in scientific collaborations that attract people from around the world", said Dr. Arthur Carty, President of NRC. Le 22 mai 2001, l'Honorable Brian Tobin, Ministre de l'Industrie et responsable pour le CNRC, a dévoilé des plans pour un nouveau laboratoire à l'OFRA, Penticton, équivalent à 3 M$Can. La construction commencera plas tard cette année. "Les installations du CNRC comme celle de l'OFRA possèdent un noyau de chercheurs qui participent à des collaborations scientifiques et attirent des gens du monde entier", dit le Dr. Arthur Carty, Président du CNRC.
David Schade became Group Leader of the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre in April. HIA thanked its previous Leader, Daniel Durand, for a job well done in the past 5 years, including ensuring that CADC truly is a 24hr/day service operation. En avril, David Schade est devenu Chef de Groupe au Centre Canadien de Données Astronomiques. L'IHA a exprimé sa reconnaissance à son ancien Chef, Daniel Durand, pour 5 ans de bon travail, incluant l'assurance d'un service opérationnel de 24h/jour au CCDA.
In April, Keith Yeung became the Canadian Project Manager for HARP, the Heterodyne Array Receiver Program, which is a 16-detector camera slated for commissioning in 2003 on the JCMT. En avril, Keith Yeung devint le Gérant canadien du projet HARP, pour Heterodyne Array Receiver Program avec une camera de 16 détecteurs, tentativement cédulée au Télescope JCM en 2003.
Gemini MOS North passed all acceptance tests with flying colours in late March in Edinburgh, Scotland. David Crampton and his Instrumentation Group had worked hard in Victoria for that event. GMOSN then was packed and shipped to Hawaii, and is scheduled for first light in August 2001. Le SOM de Gémini Nord a passé avec grand succès ses tests d'acceptation à Edimbourg, Ecosse, en fin mars. NGST Canadian Project Scientist John Hutchings reported in May on negotiations for the building of the NGST-FGS Guider by Canada, and of the NIRCAM camera by Canada and the USA. Du côté du NGST, John Hutchings a rapporté en mai sur les négociations en cours voulant que le Canada construise le Guide NGST-FGS, et que le Canada et les E-U construisent la caméra NIRCAM.
Numerous HIA, UVic, and Pearson College staff helped the RASC Victoria to celebrate International Astronomy Day in April at St. Ann's Academy. HIA staff included Lorne Avery, Betsy Barton, Julie Bolduc-Duval, Jim Hesser, John Hutchings, Bev Oke, Scott Mair, and Jacques Vallée. Plusieurs membres de l'IHA, UVic, et Pearson College ont aidé la SRAC de Victoria à célébrer la Journée Internationale de l'Astronomie en avril, à l'Académie Ste Anne. Pour l'IHA, on avait entre autres Lorne Avery, Betsy Barton, Julie Bolduc-Duval, Jim Hesser, John Hutchings, Bev Oke, Scott Mair, et Jacques Vallée.

A Public Outreach Task Force [POTF] was formed in May 2001 to examine what we do in public outreach, to consider what we can do better, and identify what resources are required to do so. Selected from different units within HIA, the POTF is composed of Dennis Crabtree (leader), Jennifer Dunn, Jim Hesser, Kevin Farris, Simon Lilly, Scott Mair, Bev Oke, Les Saddlemyer, and Jacques Vallée, all motivated energetic people committed to the goal in question. Although currently Victoria-based, it will include Penticton activities in the future. Un Groupe de Travail pour une Campagne Publique {GTCP] a été formé en mai 2001, pour examiner ce que nous faisons en relations publiques, pour penser à ce qu'on pourrait améliorer, et identifier les ressources requises. Choisis parmi différentes unités de l'IHA, il est composé de Dennis Crabtree (chef), Jennifer Dunn, Jim Hesser, Kevin Farris, Simon Lilly, Scott Mair, Bev Oke, Les Saddlemyer, et Jacques Vallée, tous des gens motivés et énergiques capables d'atteindre le but visé.
