In April, David Bohlender became Project Manager for
the two HIA optical telescopes in Victoria.

Since April, Ken Tapping has been involved in a joint
DRAO-West Kootenay Power project to investigate the impact of solar activity
and its geomagnetic disturbances on overheating and maintenance costs
for transformers in power distribution systems.

David Crampton came back in April from a half-year
sabbatical at the UK Astronomy Technology Center & Royal Observatory in
Edinburgh, working on the Gemini MultiObject Spectrograph.

In May, Chris Purton, Charles Kerton, Brent Carlson, Chris Brunt,
Luke Moyls
were involved in the Meadowlark Festival in the Okanagan,
which drew media interest from Vancouver, Seattle and Calgary.
The Festival was able to auction off an astronomer, Chris Purton, for a princely sum of
money. The highest bidder gets an evening with Chris, devoted to a personalised
tour of the Observatory, a discussion of the Universe, and an intro to the
night sky in early August.

En mai, Chris Purton, Charles Kerton, Brent Carlson, Chris Brunt,
Luke Moyls ont participé au festival Meadowlark de l'Okanagan,
qui a attiré l'attention des média de Vancouver, Seattle, et
Calgary. Le Festival a pu vendre aux enchères l'astronome Chris Purton pour une
somme d'argent digne d'un prince, en échange de quoi le gagnant

Following a proposal to NSERC from the NRC HIA DG Office,
to increase travel grants for university-based students and postdocs going to
observe on the JCMT, CFHT, and Gemini telescopes,
an increase in the travel fund was
announced in April. The travel fund is administered by HIA's
Brenda Parrish, and done free of charge to NSERC and university
applicants. The amounts were $50k in each of fiscal years 1997, 1998, 1999, and
should be $105k in 2000, $120k in 2001, and $125k in 2002.

pour augmenter les fonds de voyage pour les étudiants et postdocs
basés aux universités pour aller aux télescopes TJCM, TCFH, et
Gémini,
une augmentation a été annonçée en avril. Ce fond pour
voyages est administré par Brenda Parrish de l'IHA,
gratuitement et sans frais pour le CRSNG et les demandeurs. Les

In May, the Canadian Time Allocation Committee, chaired by David Bohlender convened in Toronto to rank
29 Canadian Gemini proposals,
and suggest preliminary allocations and make pertinent comments. The same CTAC had
earlier met in April in Victoria for the 50 Canadian CFHT proposals.
Also in May, the Canadian Time Allocation Group chaired by Henry Matthews met in Victoria to rank
37 Canadian JCMT proposals.
In all cases, the oversubscription rate varied between 2 and 4 or so.

de temps canadiennes pour Gémini, et suggérer des allocations
préliminaires et faire des commentaires pertinents. Ce même
CCAT s'était rencontré en avril à Victoria pour les
50 demandes de temps canadiennes au TCFH.
Aussi en mai, le
Groupe d'allocation de temps canadien ,
dirigé par Henry Matthews, s'est réuni à
Victoria pour évaluer 37 demandes de temps canadiennes au TJCM.
Dans chaque cas, le taux de sursouscription de temps était situé
entre 2 et 4 environ.

This Spring, the second book written by Sidney van den Bergh
was published, titled "The Local Group of Galaxies", from Cambridge
University Press. In addition, a book edited by Stéphane Courteau
with the proceedings from the "Cosmic Flows" conference held July 1999 at HIA
was published by the Astron. Soc. of the Pacific.

Ce printemps, le deuxième livre de Sidney van den Bergh, intitulé
"The Local Group of Galaxies", est sorti chez Cambridge University Press. De plus, un livre édité par Stéphane Courteau
contenant les comptes rendus de la conférence sur les "Cosmic Flows"
tenue en juillet 1999 à l'IHA, fut publié par l'Astron. Soc. of
the Pacific.

In May, HIA issued a NRC Press
Release on an international award being bestowed on
Peter Stetson for his untiring efforts in creating and
updating the DAOPHOT and ALLFRAME software. This is the Maria & Eric
Muhlmann Award of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

un communiqué de presse du CNRC sur un prix international conféré à
Peter Stetson pour sa création des logiciels DAOPHOT et
ALLFRAME et leur amélioration au fil des ans. C'est le Prix Maria & Eric

In May, CASCA released its 15-year Plan for Canadian Astronomy,
The Origins of Structure in the Universe.
The plan recommends that Canada make a significant investment through the
Canadian Space Agency, NRC and NSERC.

En mai, la CASCA a publié son Plan de 15 ans pour l'astronomie
canadienne,
L'Origine des Structures dans l'Univers.
Le plan préconise d'importants investissements canadiens via l'Agence
Spatiale Canadienne, le CNRC et le CRSNG.

From April till September, Julie Bolduc-Duval greets
the public at the 1.8-m Plaskett telescope in Victoria on Saturday nights,
while assisting David Bohlender in scientific research
based upon the Victoria telescopes.

D'avril à septembre 2000, Julie Bolduc-Ducal accueille
les visiteurs au télescope Plaskett de 1.8-m à Victoria les samedis
soirs, et assistera David Bohlender dans ses recherches
