As Canadian Gemini Project Scientist, I have become deeply aware of the present deficiency in astronomical instrumentation building capabilities in Canadian universities.
Because of our future needs and of the health and vitality of our community, I wish to tap the available new fundings possibilities at NSERC and elsewhere (CFI) to help to create a Canadian Center for Experimental Astrophysics. My proposal, which describes the problem we face and the solution I propose, is published as a separate document in this issue of Cassiopeia.
My plan is to identify interested groups and universities (as well as champions who would lead such an initiative) in early 1999, and to submit a NSERC Major Facility Access grant proposal in the early fall of 1999.
I wish that all interested researchers or groups get in touch with me. I will be very happy to fully assist in writing and sumitting a MFA grant application.
Sincerely,
Jean-René Roy
